Jack Stiler's return to The Lucky Star Ranch in South Texas is bittersweet. The property along this stretch of the Little Hondo has been in his family since the early 1900s. An ex-Wall Streeter, Stiler is still dealing with the loss of his beloved wife to cancer and the humiliation of a scandal that ended his career. He now faces the challenge of a lifetime as he tries to save the ranch. The region has been plagued by a drought of historic proportions, and the area surrounding his home is rife with the tra

I falsely thought this was going to be a book in the western genre. I was mistaken. It is a good read, includes and addresses many of the modern issues, and I couldn't put it down. I'm a fast reader, but found myself purposely slowing my reading down to enjoy the words, it's so well written.Well, actually, I had to put it down for a few hours. You see, we were on a boat on the open ocean, making a crossing between islands. As soon as we entered the reef barrier, I had to find out what happened next, I had only 5 chapters to go, and there were lots of things happening. So, while I was trying not to be seasick, my imagination and thoughts were all about that book, and what would happen next.
I hear he has a new book coming out, soon. Will be buying that one as soon as it's available.

Wandering West Gary C Stalcup 9781483403274 Books Reviews
I dug this book! It was nearly impossible to put down each time i dove into it. A window into the rugged terrain and daily struggles of life in a rural Texas border-town. I'm a sucker for a good western, so anything set in the wild west or rugged terrain will pique my interest. This one definitely fit the bill with gunfights, rattlesnakes and dusty trails. You can pretty much feel the Texas heat when you read it. The protagonist, Jack Stiler, is constantly thrust into complex situations which keeps the pages flying from one to the next. Unfortunately, it ended and what I realized about Jack's story is that it's not a western after all, but a modern-day tale of a man with much of the same struggles (internal and external) you or I might have. I found it was easy to identify with him and feel his emotions. To me, the inward-focused character development of Jack Stiler is what makes this story so riveting. It checked all my boxes and I can't wait to read Gary Stalcup's next release.
I enjoyed reading Wandering West especially since it was written by a person from my hometown.
It has been a very long time since I purchased a book that was so good that I had a hard time putting it down. This book addresses many of the challenges that we can all identify with in our own personal lives and the struggles that we see many of our friends and family go through. The setting of the story could be found in almost any era of our American history or in present day events. Really good book & anxious for the next one to come out.
Being from South Texas it was very entertaining to read of such familiar subjects. The ever threatening problem of illegal crossings our border hit home.
What a wonderfully descriptive story , set in rural Texas with a current theme. A story revolving around family with danger and hardship ranchers face near the Mexican border. Gary weaved a fine story bringing old memories back.
Wandering West is a must read for anyone regardless if they were reared in any rural area of the country or whose family immigrated from Europe and settled in New York or California and reared their children in the 1950’s and 1960’s. It will bring back what your grandparents and parents attempted to teach each of us about regardless of the circumstances that life throws your way - remember the tenets taught by past generations of always trying to “do the right thing.” It will make one melancholy, but in a good way because it will help one remember your loved ones whether family or your extended family of friends and neighbors who cared about each other. It reminds us that tragedies happen to all of us and we all have and will have family traumas, but not to let it warp your sense of persevering and taking care of those who are important in your life, whether or not they want you involved – don’t stop trying. The younger generation will be gain a new sense of pride in their ancestry. It will take you through tragedies, triumphs, loyalties, disappointments and romance. Most of all it will give you a sense of belonging to something bigger than yourself, which is your own self-awareness of where you came from and why it was and is important to you how you live your life.
To be honest, I read Where Shadows Loom and fell in love with the intensity of the narrative and character development...so went directly to Wandering West. Gary nailed it - action personified, adventure, passion, love of life and caring for others! It broke my heart but also I fell in love with his story! We should all be so lucky to have a life lived on a ranch with extended family, loving staff who indeed become family and show up in times of need within minutes. Small time vets, local doctors, phones connecting the lives of others, the reality of where we all are.. WOW! And then... shall we mention the dark side of drug dealers? This indeed is a book for anyone with a sense of adventure, love of friends and family, a huge heart, and thoughts of where we are heading! Thanks again Gary for a spectacular read! Keep on writing and we shall all keep on reading!
